The feelings given by the clerks in the supermarkets.
“Here the change is. Thank you for shopping with us today.” You might heat this sentence from the clerk in the stores. Most of us have the experience of shopping in the supermarkets. Every time we pay for the stuff, we meet clerks with various working styles, which brings us different kind of feelings.
The first type are clerks with high hospitality. “There are cheaper discounts for this brand, would you like to change for it?” Always wearing a smile, this kind of clerks are so willing to tell you some discounts or some promotion in the supermarkets and make you feel satisfied with their service. If you are not familiar with certain products, just turn to them for more information, normally they would provide you with more details about the products. Or when you cannot find the product you want, they will patiently tell you where the product is without hesitation. According to my observation, clerks with such qualities are pretty rare. The clerks in the supermarkets are asked to be equipped with various skills and have to deal with different kinds of situations; thus, it’s not simple for them to handle the customers patiently. Especially when they meet those picky customers, it’s easy for them to lose their temper.
The second types are clerks who give you the cold shoulders. Opposite to the first type, this kind of clerks behave indifferently, making you feel aloof. Usually, they are quiet. When you ask them question, it seems that they don’t want to talk to you, sometimes making you feel confused. Facing this kind of clerks, you might not have a happy shopping experience, since it feels like they just want to finish their job as soon as possible. They are not willing to do any other service that beyond the requirement, such as wearing a smile, being friendly and amiable to the customers, or saying thank you after giving change to them. Perhaps, they do this job just for money, and they are dying to knock off from work; therefore, they treat the customers abstractedly. For me, this type of clerks is the last kind I want to meet; I feel sick of their cold attitude.
The third type are the extremely rigorous clerks. This type would be the most desirable employees for the boss. They don’t talk much, and they do everything with quick action and also patience. For instance, whether there are many people waiting in line or not, they check the bill as fast as they can. With rigorous mind, they carefully calculate the change and hand into customer’s hand with quick action but without any discrepancies. “Remember to hold your change carefully” — — though they are in a hurry, they still care about the customers in a considerate way. However, in some particular situation, when encountering with this kind of clerks, you might feel a little uncomfortable, since you need to follow up their tempos and that you are pushed to do what you are supposed to do. For example, after finishing your payment and getting the change from the clerk, you see the clerk rapidly swiping the goods from the next customer, at this moment, his/her quick action will make you feel nervous that you would quickly pick up all your items since you don’t want to be the one who blocks the whole checking line. Overall, thanks to their quick action and dedicated attitude, we save the time waiting in line.
The last type are the talkative clerks. Indeed, this kind of clerks talk a lot. They take their job as an opportunity to interact with people. When you are busy on the way home to cook dinner, you will dislike him/her; however, when you aren’t in a rush on a Sunday morning, you will listen to his/her complaint of the job or something that has got from the neighborhood, then chitchat with him/her. Gossipy clerks always know who break up with whom or who is going to get married. Sometimes, they make you laugh by telling you some ridiculous story, while sometimes they might make you want to leave the store as soon as possible, since they annoyingly talk nonstop. The most embarrassing thing could be that if the topic of the gossip you and the clerk talk about are coincidentally at the shop too, the situation could be so awkward that the clerk and you want to dig a hole and bury yourself on the spot.
Normally, we expect that we can meet a nice clerk and have a wonderful shopping experience. However, being a good customer also matters, since that those hard-working clerks are also expecting to meet a friendly buyer, not a picky or a peculiar one. It’s believed that as long as we show our sincere and respectful attitude, those clerks will sense it and treat us politely as well.
